Does an atom in a covalent compound get a negative charge by sharing electrons?

When atoms form covalent bonds they share electrons. Does this mean that when the bond is formed one or both atoms will get a negative charge? After all, by sharing an electron pair it will "gain possession" of an electron of another atom right?
