It is safe to hide under objects during the earthquake?

I have noticed that many people hide under table when the quake hits..recently i read about safety tips during the earthquake.There they say u need to stay near the objects not under!! They also mention about being a very bad idea hiding under a table because when the wall will co-lapse on the table,it won t be strong enough to keep the wall and will all together crush on u..
