Oxidation of a di-ol?

Generally aldehydes are more easily oxidized than primary alcohols so oxidation of ethanol would be difficult to stop at the aldehyde stage and would usually give acetic acid. Similarly the diol would give oxalic acid (COOH)2. Powerful reagents like permanganate result in fission of the C-C bond.
