How do i choose pearls?

i am going with my boyfriend and his mom to LA where we are going to the jewelry district. she is buying some pearls. anyone have any tips on what to look for, terms or whatever? ive never learned much about them apart from that they come from oysters lol. i am also looking up stuff online before we go. i just want to have a basic understanding of them. thanks in advance for any help!
