Why does NATO give such stupid names for Russian military aircraft?

Just to add to Maj Kev's excellent answer, many times NATO was not aware of any Soviet designation, let alone a nickname igned to any aircraft due to the intense secrecy behind the Iron Curtain. Even the bureau numbers commonly used for Soviet aircraft were coined by NATO. Odd numbers denoted combat aircraft and even numbers were used for training, cargo, and utility aircraft.
